Kanban is a visual system for managing work as it moves through a process. It uses visual cards on a process board, with the number of cards in each stage equal to its agreed capacity. The cards each represents a single piece of work that has a start and an end state.
Kanban visualises both the workflow and the actual work passing through and aims to identify potential problems in a process and fixes them. Kanban also orders that the amount of work in progress gets limited, so work can proceed to flow through at an optimal speed and cost-effectively. The team can only begin work on a new item, once a slot for it has become available on the board.
