Skills Matrix

A Skills Matrix is an easy and visual tool used to map out and visualise your team’s skills and identify skills gaps and training needs. The skills matrix has three key steps:

  1. identify the job roles in the team
  2. review and code standards of performance
  3. Assess the requirements on-the-job training

A grid is used that contains information about the available skills and their evaluation. The Skills Matrix purpose is to highlight training needs, monitor, plan, and control existing and desired skills for training effectiveness, increase flexibility by encouraging employees to learn a range of skills, and to match the demands of your business. An advantage of using a Skills Matrix is it focuses conversations on how work is completed, and the level of skills needed to complete the tasks.
