Background:
You work in a world where going on adventurous quests for treasure is a way of life.
(link:"Continue")[=
You're an extraordinary Quest Leader with over 15 years of Treasure Hunting and Questing experience.
(link:"Continue")[=
You have a Team of people working for you who have various Treasure Questing skills. And you value ALL of them, you're a true believer in diversity, engagemen and empowerment. One thing you always say is "Learning is Doing".
(link:"Continue")[=
One day, your GM comes over and says that there's a new type of treasure called "Gold" and she wants you to get your team to find Pots of Gold ASAP - because we want to be seen to be First! You're all enthusiastic 'cos your GM is a visionary leader and comes up with some innovative "out of the box" ideas like this one.
(set: $gold_coins to 0)[[Next Page->First Steps]]As you think about your
first steps you find you have some options:
0. Tell the Team they're empowered to give the quest a go because you have deep faith in their abilities. [[You let them have a go at this quest.->Faith in Team]] ```[Doesn't cost anything, but feels really good]```
0. [[Train your People]] in the right skills for a Gold Hunting Quest ```[Will mean some investment]```
0. [[Connect with your GM]] and other key stakeholders to understand why it's important to find pots of gold, and what strategy we could use to achieve maximum success ```[Could take you 2 weeks before you meet with your GM]```Your team are excited!
They come up with brilliant ideas on which direction to start off in.
(link:"Continue")[=
Some go north, some go south, some go east and some head west.
(link:"Continue")[=
So you have a choice:
0. [[Call your team->Call your Team]] back together again and confirm where we are versus where we need to end up
0. You call them back & give them some understanding of where we are and where we want to go, them some [[training on orienteering->Training in Orienteering with GM]] so they can find the right direction
0. You let them continue because they get a feeling of empowerment and achievement in [[doing their own thing->Learn by Doing]]You start off trying
to find a training provider for your people. When you search on Google, you find yourself with a choice of 3
training providers.
(link:"Continue")[=
Do you choose:
0. [The first provider suggests that we train your direct reports on how to find Gold. It's just 1 day of training and the participants get a "Gold Diggers Certificate". This option is really inexpensive. [[Do you choose this one?->"Gold Digger's Certificate"]] ```[Inexpensive, takes 3 weeks to complete]```
]
0. [The second training provider suggests you simply get the standard training packages that are available on www.training.gov.au.
Some of these attract Government funding too - that you could use instead of investing your own money in the program. [[Choose this option?->www.training.gov.au]] ```[Cost effective, can take up to 3 months]```
]
0. [The third training provider says "Tell me what you want, what you really really want" and after listening to your needs, suggests that:
* You first consider your strategic direction,
* Make sure that your Executive level leadership is aligned on some of the values and behaviours of
"treasure questing",
* Make sure your Exec will directly support you and your team to find the Pots of Gold
This training company seem to have a holistic approach to developing your people. [[Do you choose this one? (you take this training provider to meet with your GM)->Connect with your GM]] ```[Cost unknown, could take 2 weeks or so before you meet with you GM]```]When you meet your GM, she explains that our Vision "To Inspire the world's Treasure Hunters to be a little better every day" has a new strategic pillar "Find Innovative and New Sources of Treasure".
(link:"Continue")[=
And this new strategy means that we could be the first Treasure Hunter Group to find this new treasure called Gold.
(link:"Continue")[=
She then explains that YOU have been selected to lead this hunt for Gold because you're noted for your little saying "let's make the ideal real". And YOU have been given the mandate to succeed in YOUR own way.
[[Next Page->Inspired by GM]]Your team members all feel like they know which way to go.
(link:"Continue")[=
You can now encourage them to:
0. Keep going and [["learn by doing"->Learn by Doing]]
0. [[Enrol in an orienteering course->Training in Orienteering with GM]] where our GM wants to kick off the training & clarify the overall vision of the questSome of your team members go off on their own to find some tools to collect pots of gold (They discover that Google and Youtube are their friends).
(link:"Continue")[=
Some get together in little groups because they feel like teamwork is more powerful.
(link:"Continue")[=
[[See what happens by the end of the week->End of Week via Learn by Doing]]Your GM (who you've kept informed of the overall Quest and how you're planning to Win Gold), comes along to kick off your Treasure Quest upskilling program. She lets people know why we're doing this, why now, the vision, how they were selected and that she and the rest of the exec team will sponsor success!
[[Next Page->Inspired Training with GM]]Those that worked on their own gave up because they weren't getting any support and felt overwhelmed - I mean how the heck are you supposed to do this new project on top of your "BAU"?!! They give up!
(link:"Continue")[=
Those that formed teams end up feeling like they discovered too many options, too many ways to find gold, everyone has an opinion, no-one wants to take or own the decisions, and eventually give up because they're not even getting any support from the "treasure bosses".
(set: $gold_coins to $gold_coins + 10)[[Next Page->Bad End]]Your team got (text-colour:#fcc419)[$gold_coins] gold coins
This didn't go very well at all huh! Feel free to go back a few steps and choose different options.
Or, you can [[go back to the start->Background]]As the team sets off on their quest, they pick up a gold coin at every step they take. After about 1000 steps, the team realise that the REAL pot of gold is the gold they picked up along the way.
(link:"Continue")[=
As they get to the end of their quest, they find:
* They feel good about themselves
* They love telling others how well they've done and what they've learnt
* They love reporting this back to you and the GM
* They figure out that what they've learnt isn't just about Gold - it can also help them with their lives & how to KEEP the "pot of Gold"
(set: $gold_coins to $gold_coins + 1000)[[Find out what happens next...->What Happens Next]]The people that you train feel like they can quest on their own - because they all possess the "Gold Diggers Certificate" qualification!
[[Next Page->Learn by Doing]]You search on www.training.gov.au and you discover SO many different types of training options that it becomes overwhelming. It's all a bit much - so you run some basic internal training (using a few YouTube videos) for your Quest Team and let them loose to find some Gold.
[[Next Page->Learn by Doing]]As you assign the quests to teams, they feel like we can make progress. They appreciate being chosen for their specific mini quests.
(link:"Continue")[=
If you think that you've chosen the best mini quests to give to the best individuals and teams, [[choose this option.->Learn by Doing]]
If you feel like there are just SO many mini-quests to do that you HAVE to start somewhere, you choose to [[create a backlog->Creating a Backlog]] of quest projects and tick them off one after the other.
You get the business case approved to conduct some training. You plan the training really well, and find the right type of orienteering courses.
(link:"Continue")[=
You find the provider who has the best Google reviews for providing the "Gold Diggers Certificate". You engage them to complete a 1 day training program.
[[Next Page->"Gold Digger's Certificate"]]You run a workshop to work out how we do our treasure questing now, vs how things could be. This uncovers lots of ways to make questing not only more efficient but also more fun for your people.
(link:"Continue")[=
You can now:
0. Work out the entire [[list of "quest improvement" activities->Creating a Backlog]] and get to work on them
0. Figure out that there are MANY "quest improvement" activities you "could do", but [[only a few->Concise List]] that you "should do"You start to work on these mini quests and conduct a stand up review meeting each week to check in on quest progress.
(link:"Continue")[=
Before long, you find that people are losing interest in these mini-quests and there are ALWAYS so many more strategies that the exec team comes up with.
(link:"Continue")[=
After a while, you and the team feel a bit lost, and you feel like this "gold" is simply a mythical metal that OTHERS seem to find easily - but it's not for you.
(set: $gold_coins to $gold_coins + 150)[[Next Page->Bad End]]You create a list of the mini quests (projects) that you "should do", based on what aligns to strategy.
(link:"Continue")[=
Based on the activities that you Should Do, you select the best types of orienteering and treasure questing training that you must provide. So, when your people enrol for this orienteering training, they can also apply what they learn to the right mini-quests.
[[Next Page->Training in Orienteering with GM]]Your team got (text-colour:#fcc419)[$gold_coins] gold coins!
You now have a choice. You can:
0. Now that your team of Treasure Questors have had a taste of success, you let your team tackle [[the next quest->Second Quest]]
0. Encourage your team to ADD to their Pot of Gold and [[fill it up even more->Second Quest]]
0. [[Celebrate their success->Celebrate and Reflect]] and reflect on what they've learnt
As your team sets off on their next quest or to fill up their pot even more, you realise that we haven't had a chance to pause and reflect on what we've learnt!
(link:"Continue")[=
You catch the team in time before they go on their questing way and let them know that we will have a [[Quest Completion Celebration Day!->Celebrate and Reflect]]You ask the GM to attend the Quest Completion Ceremony. In this short celebration, the GM thanks each team member personally for their contribution. Team members get to share their adventures and know what they would do differently next time. Everyone enjoys the feast afterwards
[[See how the journey continues->The Next Adventure]]Your Team feel a renewed sense of adventure. They know they can get on with the next quest with more experience points than ever before. So, they set off on their adventure to find the next innovative resource - (text-colour:#22b8cf)[Diamonds]!
Congratulations Winner! You feel inspired by what the GM tells you.
(link:"Continue")[=
Do you now:
0. Work out how to break the team into treasure [["Questing Teams"]] and inspire them the way the GM inspired YOU. Of course this means you have to assign different mini treasure quests (called "projects") to different people and teams and let them find the pots of gold - you can't do it all yourself after all.
0. Decide that your people need [[training->Training Business Case]] - this is the best opportunity to upskill your people - especially when the GM is backing you the way that she is.
0. [[Conduct a short analysis->Conduct a Short Analysis]] (1 to 2 days max) of where we now are in our skills, the way we do things and how we could be even better Treasure QuestorsThe team feel inspired by the GM's sense of direction and her vision. They learn a lot of tips and tools to help them [[hunt for gold!->The Real Pot of Gold]]
